Carrie Howland joined Donadio & Olson, Inc., Literary Representatives, in 2005. She represents young adult, middle grade, and picture book authors, as well as adult literary fiction. In addition to her own clients, Carrie handles foreign, first serial, and audio rights for the agency. Carrie is a member of SCBWI and the Association of Authors’ Representatives and writes for its newsletter. She also enjoys speaking at various writing conferences throughout the year.

Carrie holds a B.A. in English and Creative Writing from Albion College, where she was the Poetry Editor of The Albion Review. Her poetry has appeared in various literary journals and magazines. In her spare time, Carrie volunteers as a foster for a local dog rescue and with deployed military men and women through an organization called Soldiers’ Angels. She is also a member of the New York Junior League and the New York City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Gamma. Carrie lives in Brooklyn, New York. You can follow her on twitter at @ecarriehowland and learn more about her and the agency by visiting http://www.donadio.com and www.ecarriehowland.com.

Carrie is accepting submissions for young adult, middle grade, and picture books. Please send your query and first 25 pages to carrie@donadio.com.

Carrie’s background is in poetry, so beautiful language is one of the first things she looks for in any project. Also important are a strong voice and a great story, which she’s looking for across genres, from contemporary to soft-sci-fi and light fantasy. She often describes her taste as quirky and maybe even a bit dark. Carrie is drawn to strong, dynamic characters with a lot of agency, who make their own choices, but keep us guessing. And of course, she still has a soft spot for a good love story.

Recent favorite sales include the young adult debut Arrows by Melissa Gorzelanczyk (Delacorte Press/Random House Children’s, January 2016), which she pitched as MTV’s Teen Mom meets Greek Mythology. Pamela Ehrenberg’s picture book Queen of the Hanukkah Dosas (Farrar, Straus Children’s, Fall 2017) about a family’s tradition of making Hanukkah dosas and how this brings together the best of her mother’s Indian upbringing and her father’s Jewish religion. (Carrie and Pamela met at an SCBWI conference!) And The Shark Curtain (Black Sheep/Akashic, April 2015) a literary YA debut about a young girl in the 1960s who knows she’s different (she barks in public, sees Jesus doing handstands in the pool), but isn’t sure why. Carrie is always looking for Young Adult books that do what Garth Stein, New York Times best-selling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain, said about The Shark Curtain: “The Shark Curtain will turn you inside out and make you see the world differently. As well you should. As well we all should. Because life isn’t about having the answers, it’s about grappling with the questions.”

On a personal level, Carrie’s two biggest loves are rescue dogs (especially her own rescue Pomeranian, Zooey) and the great state of Michigan (her childhood home). So if your book features puppies or a small town in the Midwest, she’d love to see it! Carrie also has a not-so-secret obsession with horror movies and isn’t of middle grade or YA that features things that go bump in the night.

  1. Kristen C.S. says:

This sounds fabulous! What’s the recommendation for completed manuscripts that are already being queried? Apply? Don’t apply? Apply with a different manuscript?
    Thanks! =)

    • Hi Kristen, it really depends on what manuscript you want to dig into. You might want to work on the one you’re querying right now or try something new. Your preference. If you’re interested hurry, because there’s A LOT of interest! Happy Summer!!
