Next in line for our fabulous Fall Philly Faculty spotlight is Sean McCarthy of the Sean McCarthy Literary Agency.
Hi Sean! What’s on your wish list right now?
The longer that I work in publishing, the broader that my wish list becomes. I’m really just looking for any story that demands my attention the entire way through, and compels me to keep turning the page. Humor and strong characters are always a plus in all genres, though I’m probably not the best match for YA romance.
What’s your best tip for creating a strong pitch?
I love authors that know exactly what their book is about, and where it will fit in the current trade market. I prefer theDragnet approach—just the facts, please. Sometimes authors have a hard time paring down their work (and I get it—you should be proud of your writing!), but I tend to believe that less is more when it comes to pitches. Or to put it another way, if you had to convince a total stranger to read your book in only a couple of sentences, what would you say?
Thanks so much for the great advice! Looking forward to seeing you at Fall Philly!
