Here’s some exciting news from members in our region this month:
Author Katey Howes has two upcoming books for publication: Woven of the World, a picture book illustrated by Dinara Mirtalipova that explores weaving as a global art form and celebrates each person as a rich tapestry woven from many cultures and traditions (Chronicle, fall 2020); and Rissy No Kissies, a picture book to be illustrated by Jess Engle that explores the concept of body autonomy and consent with the message that your body and your heart are yours—and you choose how to share and show love (Lerner/Carolrhoda, spring 2021).
Author/Illustrator B. E. Exon’s debut picture book, Moxie and the Kite-Bite’n Ash (Austin Macauley), was released in November 2019. In the story, a brash young boy named Moxie and his concerned companion, Mr. Cat, go out one day to fly a kite in the perfect meadow—perfect except for one tree . . . BEWARE! This tree bites kites . . . to eat! B. E. Exon will be appearing at the Swarthmore Community & College Book Store, attached to the Swarthmore Inn, for a presentation in the Sycamore Room, followed by a signing in the book store, Sunday, March 1, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. (presentation 40 minutes). All are welcome!
Author Laura Sibson will be speaking at a Jewish Teen Leadership Convention in February and will be appearing at the Southern Kentucky Book Festival (SOKY) in March. She also has an article coming out on 88 Cups of Tea (88cupsoftea.com).
Author Sue Gagliardi’s Fairy Tale Science books (Focus Readers, North Star Editions, 2020) were released in early January. Titles include Making a Bridge for the Gingerbread Man, Making a Windproof House for the Three Little Pigs, and Making a Raft for the Three Billy Goats Gruff. In many fairy tales, characters must rely on quick-thinking to overcome challenges. In this fun series, readers complete hands-on activities using science and engineering to help beloved fairy-tale characters. Each title includes an “In the Real World” special feature.
